About us

Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE) is a Community Benefit Society whose purpose is to improve local community resilience in the face of increasing energy costs and climate change. It is clear that everyone – not just governments and corporates but households and communities too –  has a role to play. And that is why GUCE exists.

GUCE has funded numerous projects which help improve local community resilience in the face of increasing energy costs and climate change, including the installation of a 46kW solar array at a local school. Now, GUCE has obtained a grant from the Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) to examine the options for community-wide decarbonised heating within the village of Kings Langley.

To do this study, GUCE has employed Bioregional, an environmental charity with 20 years’ experience in developing zero-carbon homes, alongside heat network and heat pump experts Fairheat and ICAX  in assessing the viability of a community scale zero-carbon heating solution. More information on the team can be found below.

Between now and March 2023, the team will be conducting a feasibility study to determine what a community heat-network could look like in Kings Langley, and the best way this could be developed. This will include exploring the suitability of various fossil fuel-free heat systems and identifying viable business models that will work best for the community.

Importantly, this is a community project. Bioregional, Fairheat, and ICAX have the technical knowledge and experience, but GUCE need to hear your insight, thoughts, and concerns throughout this process so we can work towards the best possible outcome. In the springtime, the project team will be hosting a community workshop to hear your views and discuss the future of heating within Kings Langley.
